Andrea Binder

Andrea Binder is a Freigeist Fellow and Research Group Leader at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science, Freie Universität Berlin. Her research centers on international political economy and humanitarian politics. In 2023, her book Offshore Finance and State Power was published by Oxford University Press.


As a first-generation academic, Andrea Binder’s path to academia was shaped by various twists of fate, ultimately leading her to earn a PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge, where she was a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Her dissertation received the Körber Foundation's German Dissertation Award in 2020. She also holds an M.A. in political science, economics, and rhetoric from the University of Tübingen.


Andrea has been a visiting scholar at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económica (CIDE) in Mexico and the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) in Brazil. She is a member of Die Junge Akademie and serves as a non-resident fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute, an independent think tank based in Berlin.
